How Do We Compare?

The long term use of equine medications, such as omeprazole, ranitidine, cimetidine, famotidine, and calcium / aluminum / magnesium anti-ulceratives, comes with a set of unpleasant side effects and none of them are meant for long term use.

Omeprazole, ranitidine, cimetidine and famotidine work by suppressing almost all of the production of stomach acid from the stomach walls. Calcium / aluminum / magnesium products simply neutralize the acid made by the stomach. The theory behind these medications is basically, “less acid helps heal ulcers”. Unfortunately for the horse, this is the same normal acid that digests food, kills or controls fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites. It keeps your horse nourished, safe and healthy.

While these chemical treatments can be effective, they are very expensive in some cases and very inconvenient. Most can cost upwards of $40 per day or $1,200 per month, with two or more months being the minimum usual time period for treatment.

At best, omeprazole heals only 70–80% of lesions and there is a very high rate of recurrence.

Jeremiah’s Ulcer Repulser™ (J.U.R.) allows the stomach and GI tract to function just as it was meant to, without compromising its ability to digest food or kill harmful pathogens. J.U.R. takes complete care of the entire irritated GI tract, not just the ulcers. We, along with our customers, insist that J.U.R. works faster than the alternatives, and provides a protective effect immediately without interfering with normal stomach and GI functioning.

J.U.R. is a powerful herbal blend that forms a nutritious and fully digestible mucilaginous gel, which acts as a demulcent (i.e., protective coating) and is rich in phospholipids and polysaccharides. This coating adheres to the equine digestive system’s ulcers and irritations, guarding them from the attack of stomach acids and other irritants.

This encourages the stomach and digestive system to produce more of its own natural protective mucous, while also acting to reduce excess stomach acids, remove toxins, and reduce the overgrowth of any harmful bacteria. Simultaneously, the protective demulcent seeds the digestive system with beneficial bacteria and lines the walls of the equine digestive tract with the anti-inflammatory agent known as L-glutamine.

J.U.R.’s method for relief is simple, and in most cases can be used just once each day, added to one of your friend’s regular meals. It can be used for as long as needed, even indefinitely.

Most horses love the taste of J.U.R. The days of chalky powder, pill grinders, sticky liquids, and syringe concoctions are over. Forget trying to encourage your horse to eat, or wondering how much supplement will actually be eaten. While we always suggest you maintain a great relationship with your vet and use their services when needed, you won’t ever have to call them (or pay them) to bring your horse’s supply of J.U.R.

The horse feed supplement is delicious and nutritious. There are no fillers. Most importantly, J.U.R. does not contain any of the following harmful ingredients that can be found in some other equine GI supplements…

❌ NO MEADOWSWEET — this herb contains salicylic acid which can inflame or even cause ulcers and other digestive issues.

❌ NO LICORICE ROOT — this herb is not for long-term use because even in its safest form, it interacts with many medications, including anticoagulants. ANY form of licorice root can cause your horse to “test positive” for eugenol, an analgesic which is banned under the USEF. Owners are often told to stop supplements containing licorice root at least two weeks before an event to prevent disqualification. Usually in its place, the horse is put on an aluminum / magnesium / calcium supplement to replace the licorice root during that time lapse (unhealthy and inconsistent.)

No ingredient in J.U.R. is banned in any way, shape, or form by the USEF or any other organization that we know of. Your horse will not test positive for banned substances due to the use of Jeremiah’s Ulcer Repulser™. It can be taken in the days leading up to and during your event, improving your horse’s condition and protecting its gut during the stress of shipping and showing, thus maximizing his/her performance in any discipline while helping to get them home safe.

❌ NO BISMUTH — bismuth is based from salicylic acid.

❌ NO DIGESTIVE ENZYMES — but lots of digestive probiotics and prebiotics. Enzymes, when added to the diet of a horse with ulcers or any gastrointestinal issue, can inflame the digestive tract and can cause ulcers and other distress.

❌ NO ANTACIDS — such as salts, aluminum, magnesium, or other toxic substances.

❌ NO OATMEAL OR WHEAT (whole or ground) — sounds good, tastes good, but are really just fillers and poor substitutes for effective demulcents.

❌ NO ETHOXYQUIN or other unhealthy preservatives.

Jeremiah’s Ulcer Repulser™ Ingredients

✅ Slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra). Slippery elm bark is widely used in veterinary and human herbal medicine for its demulcent and gastroprotective properties. It is rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides that hydrate to form a viscous, protective gel coating the entire digestive tract.

In horses, this coating helps soothe irritated mucosa and is commonly used in the management of chronic diarrhea, esophagitis, gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulceration, and colonic irritation. Slippery elm also exhibits natural anti-inflammatory activity and supports the reduction of pathogenic bacteria that proliferate in disturbed gastrointestinal environments. As a prebiotic source of soluble fiber, it promotes the growth of beneficial hindgut flora.

The mucilage stimulates a reflex increase in gastric mucus secretion, enhancing the stomach’s intrinsic protective barrier against excess acidity and mechanical irritation. Its marked water-binding capacity draws water into desiccated fecal material while simultaneously adding bulk to loose or watery stools, effectively normalizing stool consistency and providing relief in irritable or unstable bowel conditions.

Naturally occurring minerals, including calcium, may further contribute to its antacid and buffering effects along the gastrointestinal tract.

✅ Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis). Marshmallow root has similar properties to slippery elm bark: it is highly mucilaginous, soothing to mucosal tissues, and anti-inflammatory. When hydrated, its mucilage forms a gel-like demulcent coating that lines the entire digestive tract from the mouth to the rectum, helping to neutralize excess stomach acid.

In horses, marshmallow root has been traditionally used to support cases of chronic diarrhea, esophagitis, gastritis, and gastric and duodenal ulceration, as well as inflammatory conditions of the large intestine.

✅ Fenugreek seed (Foenum graecum). Fenugreek seed, a member of the same Fabaceae plant family as alfalfa, contains abundant mucilaginous polysaccharides and flavonoids. These constituents promote the formation of a gastroprotective gel that adheres to mucosal surfaces, helping to soothe and protect against mucosal injury.

Fenugreek seed also exhibits antioxidant, anti-secretory, and anti-inflammatory properties that support gastrointestinal healing responses. Emerging research suggests fenugreek seed may also assist in moderating blood glucose levels and supporting healthy metabolic function.

✅ Carrot powder (Daucus carota). Aside from the taste, which horses naturally love, carrot powder is a natural very effective neutralizer of excess gastric acidity and provides a source of pectin, a soluble fiber that enhances and becomes an integral part of the mucilaginous gel and demulcent properties of this special blend.

✅ Probiotics. Enterococcus faecium, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus casei, and lactobacillus plantarum. These are broad spectrum dietary probiotics which become a part of the demulcent coating to help develop a new and healthy balance of intestinal bacteria.

✅ L-Glutamine (vegetarian). Glutamine levels become depleted in times of high metabolic stress during digestive distress and intensive training, causing diarrhea, stomach and colon ulceration, reduced nutrient absorption, and other digestive problems. L-Glutamine replenishes these stores, providing fuel to the muscles and support for the immune cells in the intestinal mucosa, protecting against illness and tissue damage.

Additional Information

Acute or dire gastrointestinal issues or ulcers, in our view, should be supplemented twice each day for at least one week, depending upon the situation. As we all know, being horse owners/riders, a horse’s reaction to gut pain can be very severe. If you prefer to use a twice per day regimen, as some severe situations require, you can base your order and reorders on that schedule (you know your horse’s needs best.) Always be sure to call your veterinarian in any emergency.

Equine Cushing’s Disease

PITUITARY pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, Cushing’s disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Normally, dopamine binds to the pituitary receptors, regulating hormone levels. However, with horses suffering Cushing’s disease, a neuronal impairment leads to hormone imbalances that can severely affect their quality of life.

Equine Cushing’s disease can affect horses of any age (2.9% of all horses) but is most prevalent in those aged 15 and older where it has been reported to affect around 20% of horses. Any breed may develop the disease, and increasing age is the only identified significant risk factor.

Symptoms of Equine Cushing’s Disease
  • Hypertrichosis — Thick curly hair that does not shed in spring. 95% of horses with advanced stages of Cushing’s disease experience hypertrichosis.

  • Hyperhidrosis — 30% of horses with Cushing’s disease experience excessive sweating (most commonly over the neck and shoulders.) This may even be observed in horses without long hair.

  • Polydipsia — Increased drinking.

  • Polyuria — 40% of horses with Cushing’s disease experience increased urination.

  • Fatty deposits — Around 25% of horses with Cushing’s disease are observed to have abnormal fatty deposits, typically around the eyes, as cresty neck, padded hinds, or dropped belly.

  • Insulin resistance — Occurs in around 60% of cases.

  • Muscle atrophy — Most obvious over the hindquarters. Also occurring in around 60% of cases.

  • Lethargy — Lack of stamina, a drop in performance, or a more docile temperament.

  • Lameness and laminitis — 50% of horses with Cushing’s disease have chronic laminitis.

  • Sudden appearance of aging.

  • Sudden appearance of what appears to be swayback.

  • Heat intolerance.

  • Wounds heal slowly.

  • Dental problems.

  • Persistent lactation and infertility.

What is Cushing’s Control™?

While Cushing’s disease, equine metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance are not considered curable, they can be managed, along with a diet high in fiber and fat and low in sugar and starch, a good senior grain with an eye to reduced sugars and carbohydrates, plenty of water, good living conditions, stress management, and responsible exercise.

Cushing’s Control™ is designed to provide endocrine and metabolic support, blood sugar control, and bolster and balance the adrenal system. This allows the symptomatic healing these horses require with an additional adaptogen action to reduce a horse’s stress and autonomic stress reactions. The remarkable chia seed is a low glycemic but power-packed nutraceutical in itself.

Cushing’s Control™ is affordable, easy to use, delicious and will not test positive for any banned substances should your horse still be competing! Like our Jeremiah’s Ulcer Repulser™, there are no fillers not expressly needed by horses struggling with these health challenges.

These conditions, when properly attended to, need some time to reflect improvement, but most do improve very-noticeably with Cushing’s Control™. As the weeks pass, your old friend should experience a marked recovery and return to a more normal lifestyle and activity.

Most horses love the taste, just sprinkle over the AM and PM feeding, and yes, this can be used alongside Jeremiah’s Ulcer Repulser™. Horses experiencing other metabolic issues too have found great results with Cushing’s Control™. Poorly functioning pituitary and adrenals can burden the thyroid tremendously, help one and help the other, help the entire horse.

Cushing’s Control™ Ingredients

✅ Chaste tree berries (Vitex agnus-castus). Chaste tree berries support healthy pituitary function in horses with Cushing’s disease (PPID). Their diterpenes and flavonoids influence dopaminergic signaling, helping regulate prolactin and overall hormone balance. Enhanced dopaminergic activity is associated with improved coat shedding, better haircoat condition, reduced excessive sweating, drinking, and urination, and a brighter, more alert attitude.

They also provide antioxidant support, helping limit oxidative stress linked with chronic endocrine imbalance. Glucose and insulin regulation may also be supported, though responses vary between horses.

✅ Chia Seeds (Salvia hispanica). Chia seeds form a mucilaginous gel in the digestive tract, slowing carbohydrate digestion and supporting more stable blood glucose levels. The gel also increases bulk and lubricity in the gut, assisting in the passage of sand and fine debris and reducing the risk of colic.

Low in starch and non-structural carbohydrates, chia seeds are rich in high-quality protein, antioxidants, flavonoids, and omega-3 fatty acids (ALA). They provide 18 of the 22 amino acids required by horses, including all nine essential amino acids, supporting healthy inflammatory response, immune function, skin, hooves, and coat condition.

Chia seeds are also a valuable source of B vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and copper. Magnesium supports insulin regulation and neuromuscular function, while omega-3s help maintain normal cell-membrane sensitivity to insulin. Dry chia seeds can absorb many times their weight in water, aiding hydration.

✅ Rhodiola root (Rhodiola rosea). Rhodiola root is a powerful adaptogen that enhances resilience to stress and fatigue. Its active compounds, rosavins and salidroside, support stress-response pathways, promoting steady energy, mental clarity, and vitality.

In horses, Rhodiola supports sustained energy, endurance, and a calmer, more focused demeanor, particularly in those experiencing PPID-related fatigue or mood changes. It also provides antioxidant and immune-supportive benefits and may contribute to healthy glucose regulation, making it an important component of metabolic support.

✅ Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Siberian ginseng is an adaptogenic herb that supports energy, stamina, and mental alertness while reducing the effects of stress. It promotes a calmer, more focused demeanor, aiding horses with fatigue or mood shifts associated with PPID.

It also enhances immune function, recovery after physical activity, and antioxidant protection, helping maintain overall wellness. By supporting balanced stress-response pathways, Siberian ginseng is a key ingredient in comprehensive support programs for performance, endurance, and age-related endocrine changes.

✅ Probiotics. A blend of Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus plantarum helps establish a healthy intestinal microbiome. These probiotics support digestive balance, nutrient absorption, and overall gut health, which is particularly valuable for horses with PPID or digestive sensitivities.

✅ L-Glutamine (vegetarian). L-Glutamine replenishes amino acid stores depleted during metabolic stress, providing fuel for muscles and immune cells. It supports tissue repair, protects against illness, and contributes to overall gut and immune health — important for horses with chronic endocrine conditions.
